There’s no Crying in Baseball

Lucas has cried 1 time since we got to the hospital.  Once.  It was when they poked his nose with the rapid COVID test which was 1 of the 3 times he had been covid tested, and I have to say that test hurts pretty bad. I know grown men that have cried from that test.

Since then, he has had a spinal tap, bone marrow taken out of his hip, a broviac (central line) put into his heart valve, 3 days of intense chemotherapy for AML, nausea, 12 days of fever north of 102, vomiting, pain from his bones and joints that the cancer took over, resonant pain in his legs from not being able to walk around, lack of sleep, barely being able to make it to the potty, water on his lungs, coughing, thrush in his mouth, and tonsilitis (to name a few).   He is on multiple meds in addition to the chemo, for nausea, fever, water on the lungs, antibiotic and just started an antifungal.

His parents on the other hand, the grown ups, well, we have cried plenty.  Not in front of him when we can help it, because we stand strong for our young warrior, we don't want to feel the wrath of the General.  Seriously, I broke up once and he looked at me like "WTF".   When your leader is in more pain than you and they don't cry, you had best snap into line.  Fearless f%%ing leader.  Warrior child.  Like he is taking this thing on, seriously I am not kidding. If I cry he gets pissed.  I see Lucas riding his horse over his men, face painted, ready to kick the British's ass at the end of Braveheart.  I see Lucas in an intense game, not getting rattled by the home teams crowd, sinking the shot like Jimmy Chitwood with the game on the line.  I see him as a leader by action, not necessarily by voice. Sinking a putt. Acing someone 4 years older than him. Crushing his board scores. Then hugging his mom after the game.

Lucas white blood count is down from a high of 193k to 27k this morning which is good.  We want the WBC to go down because it means the chemo is kicking out the bad cells also. We have learned a lot about this disease in 4 days, more than you should have to know and not nearly enough than we need to know.

The Google form thing has been really helpful for us to have centralized info , so if you have ideas, connections or thoughts please use this link.

Special shout out to Tarrytown Pharmacy for helping provide us with 25 Covid Tests for our home caregivers to Jack and Dylan.  Its right down the street, and results in 30 minutes.  SO if you are a caregiver you have a free test.  Amazing move by a class organization.

One other note , Caringbridge wrote me and said a lot of donations were made, they said they thought people might think they are donating to Lucas, but to let you know that its not , its just to operate their site, and they do not need this amount to run the site.  They will refund your money. We will come up with an alternative donation method, and Caringbridge will refund your money. We might make a pool of money for our caregivers to help with day to day operations of the house, like prepaid cards or something like that that the weekly caregiver can use for incidentals.

Prayers:
-no fever for 24 straight hours , Lucas gets to go see the gym if he is feverless for 24
-hunger, Lucas has not eaten for 4 days, since last Thursday night, although his weight is the same due to the IV fluids
- that the antifungal and antibiotics work strong, the risks in AML of infections are higher due to its intensity

Final Note:  Brad Stevens,  the head coach of the Boston Celtics sent Lucas a video text message to get better. Like directly to Lucas, not a general message.  He said he agrees that you cant be a Lakers fan if you are a Celtics fan.   We will post it later, but all I am saying, and hear me now Lucas Nation.  We are pulling for the Celtics tonight, they play the Heat at 5:30 and we are freaking pulling for the Celtics. I don't care if you are 9th Generation Miami.  Put on your wicked green, park your car and whatever else they do up there because those are the guys General Lucas is pulling for. From Copley Square to Zilker Park, lets do this yall.
